This Week's Parent Prompts
May 27, 2026 - Are You For Real? - Week 5: By Any Means Necessary

This week, we discussed Jesus' words in Matthew 5:27-30:

27 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.

We discussed the INTENSITY of Jesus' words in this passage. Why does Jesus say such an extreme thing? Because Jesus is saying we need to take sin seriously in our lives.

I compared sin to cancer and how we would not tolerate a cancerous spot on our body, instead we kill it, we radiate it, we CARVE IT OUT OF US. But we often don't treat our sin the same way. We say "it's not that bad" or "everyone does it". But God's word tells us we need to practice renouncing ungodliness and putting to death sinful habits in our lives!

Titus 2:11-12:

11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, 12 training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age.

Colossians 3:5-8:

Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming. In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth.

Questions to ask your student this week:

  • What areas of sin do you struggle with the most? Have you ever thought "it's not that bad" or "everyone does it"?
  • What are some steps we can take to practice godliness together?
  • Can we read Colossians 3:5-8 or Titus 2:11-12 today and talk about how we can live it out this week?
